Common Digital Marketing Glossary.

Digital marketing may seem like a big world out there if you are new to it. With so many new terms being invented every day to describe and label new technologies it has almost become an entire new language.

Below is a brief list of terms you are likely to come across in online marketing that will help get you up to speed with the digital world.

App: App is short for application and is a program that is designed for mobile devices. Often times it will be a variation of a program you would normally run on a desktop or laptop computer.

Blog: A blog is like an interactive article or opinion column. You can share your thoughts on something and add links to places on your website or other websites that are relevant to what you are talking about.

Content Management System (CMS): Allows you to create, store and maintain the content of your website by logging in with your username and password.

Cost per Click (CPC): The amount you pay each time someone clicks on your advertisement.

Cost per Impression (CPI): The amount you pay each time someone sees your advertisement.

Domain name: The address that your website is found at (also referred to as a URL). Domain names are commonly represented as http://www.mybusiness.co.nz.

Google Adwords: Paid advertisements that appear to an internet user who is searching Google for keywords that are associated with your business offerings.

Google Alerts: E-mails that are sent to your inbox when Google finds new results online that match a particular phrase you are interested in such as your business name or your competitors.

Google Analytics: An online service that gathers information about visitors to your website. It can track information such as how they found your site, how long they stayed for and what links they clicked on.

Google Webmaster Tools: Allows you to check how Google sees your site and allows you to diagnose any issues that may be affecting how Google ranks your site.

Hashtag (#): Used on social media platforms to group posts with a common theme together. Attaching a hashtag to a social media post means it can be found by users searching for particular keywords.

Keywords: Particular words or phrases that you would like your website to be associated with.

Meta-data: The information that sits behind your website pages and tells Google what the content is about. This includes a page title, description, and keywords for what the user can expect to find on that page of your website.

Organic Website Traffic: Website visitors who come to a site from a search engine (e.g Google). However, does not include those who clicked on links that were paid for.

Responsive Website Design: When a website is designed in such a way that it always displayed consistently across a variety of devices (desktop computer/tablet/phone) with differing screen types/sizes. We also like to refer to a responsive website as a “Mobile Friendly Website”.

Search Engine Optimisation (SEO): The process of ensuring your website is found within the first handful of results for a relevant Google search. Examples of methods used in search engine optimisation are updating the content of your website and creating links to your website from places such as online directories.

Search Engine Marketing (SEM): Where your online advert appears in or alongside the results of a search engine search for a particular phrase.

Social Media: Websites or applications where you can interact with others through different media types. For example on Instagram you can post a photo of your new product and others can respond either with a comment or they can simply ‘like’ it.

Vlog: The same idea as a Blog but instead of being written this is a video article or story.

Viral: Describes a piece of material, for example a video, that due to being unique in nature is shared extensively using social media platforms.

Website hosting: A service that holds all the content belonging to your website.
